Dharma-Burgers — for real!

Just got the coolest email from Sean C., an American living in Busan, South Korea:

“Okay, I’ve been tuning into the worse horse for a while now, finding it a great source of amusement and wonderful distraction, but have never been compelled to submit a tasty morsel of irony myself — until now. In South Korea, I am constantly barraged by the hilarity of mistranslation and other awkward cross-cultural misunderstandings. The other afternoon, after finding that our usual lunch haunt was closed, my girlfriend and I, mostly out of sheer curiosity decided to sample the local fast food chains shrimp burger deluxe (not very Buddhist, I know). Currently there is a whole “well-being” craze sweeping through Korean pop-culture which compels many food and drink manufacturers to stamp ‘well-being’ onto about everything imaginable, from donuts to ramen noodles to sugary soda to raw beef sashimi. The phrase has become a trend unto itself, standing little for the product behind it, or so it seems. So when our shrimp burgers arrived we were amazed by the meditation graphic on the wrapper. Almost immediately I thought of you folks over there chronicling this whole damn silly phenomena and pulled out my camera to snap a few.  [...] Anyway, keep the peace with the fryer grease.”

Unbelievable. Thanks, Sean!

And y’all, be sure to check out Sean’s blog and photos for more slices of life in South Korea.
