This Obama-as-Buddha teeshirt was spotted at the Union Square farmer’s market in NYC and snapped and sent by friend (and Wisdom Publications editor) MacDuff Stewart.
MacDuff kindly asks that we include this comment from her: “For the record, I’m completely against the idea of promoting Obama as a theocratic ideal, Buddhist or not.”
Fair enough, and probably not a bad idea. But then again, this wouldn’t be the first time.
Thanks MacDuff. You rock.
The final question in tonight’s US presidential debate, sent in by a New Hampshire voter, was introduced by moderator Tom Brokaw as having “a Zen-like quality” — “What don’t you know, and how will you learn it?”
As for who of McCain and Obama addressed this question more sufficiently, it is this Worst Horse’s opinion that one candidate spoke from the heart and one said what he thought the people — his teacher – wanted to hear.
Who do you think did better?
Thanks to reader Alan for sending this one:

It’s found here, on the mindbending and silly politicohumor site, The People’s Cube.

Breaking:
NEW DELHI, Aug 28 (Reuters) – The Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, was admitted to a hospital in India with “abdominal discomfort” but there was no cause for concern, doctors said on Thursday.
More here.
And in a Democratic National Convention update, Cheryl Crow, who’s performing there now before Obama’s Big Speech, just (7:50 pm EDT) introduced her song “Out of Our Heads” as being inspired by the Dalai Lama and his talk about compassion. Cool.
Those of you who found hilarity in the “Dali [sic] Obama Lama” and “Dalai Bama” shirts that have popped up on the web over the past 18 months now have something else to spend your hard-earned coin on. Behold this graphic from a new shirt from Zippy the Pinhead creator Bill Griffith:

It depicts Barack Obama, the Dalai Lama, and George Bush (the “Ding Dong”), each decked out in the muu-muu that Zippy himself made famous.
You can see it (and other stuff) here.
As mentioned in the item directly below — click HERE to watch. It’s worth it!
Nation, did you see The Colbert Report tonight?

On it, Stephen Colbert had Lama Surya Das as a guest, addressing (facetiously) whether or not Barack Obama should become a Tibetan Buddhist now that he’s looking for a new church in these, the post-Jeremiah Wright days of Obama’s presidential campaign.

This was Surya Das’s second appearance on the show, and again, he did good. He said he had “10 Reasons Why Obama Should Become a Buddhist,” and these could be found on his blog. (Sadly, they’re not.) One sample reason, Surya’s example of the confluence of Obama’s character and his possible new faith: “For 2500 years, Buddha’s been teaching about change and inclusion.”
It was also worth seeing if only for the fleeting image of “The Dalai Grimace” — but you’ll have to wait til we have video to share to see that one.
So stay tuned — or tune in for the rerun of tonight’s show tomorrow after the dinner hour on Comedy Central.
Proving the new adage that there’s a Cafe Press store for everything: The “Buddhists for Obama” pinback button:

They sell stickers too.
And don’t miss our weirdest new favorite: The Dalai Bama:

…And then, while not Obama-related, there’s always this class act.
This article on the evolution of tech companies’ logos is very cool, but Horse readers might especially dig the account of the evolution of the Canon (cameras, etc) logo. (Just scroll down a bit.)
What a pleasant surprise.

Update: Also of some possible interest, an interview with David Portolano, another new Dharma-musician on the scene.
***
Also: is Barack Obama’s sister a Buddhist? Well, philosophically speaking, yes.
Thanks to Unearthed for the tip.
This was our silly homepage banner for a lot less longer than was desired or planned. It actually linked to a particular new Dharma-Burger. (You can see that below.)
Well, sorry to dump you, D.O.L.
But Burma is more important.
