The “Buddha with Rotary Machine Gun”

No it’s not “the Buddha” — as in the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama — but Hotei, the so-called “fat” or “happy Buddha” of ancient folklore. (Often, people don’t generally know the difference; here’s more on him.)

What you see here started out as a puzzle piece for the board game Playing Gods, and is now being made available as a statuette. (There’s also a “Badass Buddha” t-shirt.) Other deity/figures were similarly created, so if this is offensive, at least it’s equal opportunity offensive.

That’s all I’m going to say about this because, well, there are no words.

METTA, THE ROTARY MACHINE GUN THING ISN’T PLEASANT TO SEE. I CAN UNDERSTAND HOW SO MUCH ANTI-DHARMIC SPEECH AND BEHAVIOR FROM SOME BUDDHISTS,ESPECIALLY SOME OF THE ROBED MIGHT MAKE THAT IMAGE SEEM INDICATIVE AND ACCEPTABLE,BUT I THINK IT HAS A TOTALLY NEGATIVE AFFECT OVERALL ESPECIALLY ON PEOPLE WHO’VE SUFFERED THROUGH VIOLENCE THROUGH WEAPONS.IT SEEMS TO INDICATE THERE IS SOME HUMOR IN SHOOTING AT PEOPLE.HAVE YOU HEARD THE SONG ON THE RADIO ABOUT NATIVE AMERICANS BEING SHOT DOWN BY A MACHINE GUN SOLDIER?THIS SITE IS FULL OF INSIGHTFUL INTELLIGENT AND EVEN FUN DHARMA.THERE IS NO NEED TO OFFEND OR MISREPRESENT DHARMA TO PEOPLE WHO MAY BE JUST DISCOVERING BUDDHISM. VIOLENCE ISN’T FUNNY. METTA, JERUSHA HAN HEBI WI

Understood. I hope it’s clear that my pointing out the existence of this thing isn’t an endorsement of it.
