There’s no shortage of ads and merchandise that play off the (unfortunate?*) use of the word “Buddha” as slang for weed. Hence this one, above, sent by Alex of Dharma Bums, who writes:
Saw this ad in the back of Citybeat Magazine here in San Diego. They have a ton of ads for Medical Marijuana dispensaries and this was one of them. As usual, the Buddha is tokin’.
Thanks for sending it on, Alex.
* Whether or not the slang term is unfortunate, actually depicting the Buddha smoking has got to be. At the very least, it sure is hacky. Plus, it’s not even a Buddha, but a Buddha statue. Duh.

I’m going to take a stand here and say that it’s not only deeply unfortunate, it’s profoundly offensive. To me, at least.

Fair nuff. Nothing wrong with taking a stand!

Sounds like you’ve got some OPINIONS there. ….try not cultivting opinions and see what happens!( That is just an Observation by the way)

So as not to interject my “opinion”, instead I will cite one of the 5 precepts, which constitute the basic code of ethics to be followed by Buddhists :
“I undertake to abstain from using intoxicating drinks and drugs, which lead to carelessness.”
It is therefore extremely doubtful that the Buddha would have smoked marijuana, or any intoxicating substance, and even more doubtful – somewhat troubling even – that someone would show a depiction of the Buddha ‘getting high’ as if to suggest that he condoned it.

that certainly is a key and common (though some forget it!) angle to this argument.
