Tiger Woods is now wearing one, as he told ESPN:
“It’s Buddhist, it’s for protection and strength and I certainly need that,” he said, adding that he began wearing the bracelet before he went into rehabilitation and that he intends to wear it forever.

All this particular story will accomplish is make the average American think that Buddhists are superstitious and put their faith in magical charms and amulets.

Roman G – I don’t know. I would think since many Christians wear crosses for similar reasons, most Americans would see it as analogous. As for the superstitious Christians (aka American majority), well, whose to say that Mr. Woods, ISN’T superstitious??

That came out wrong. I didn’t mean to say that most Americans are superstitious Christians, I meant to say that most Americans are Christians…

we give the white string bracelets to our kids in the Family Meditation class @ the end of the year – we tie 3 knots – one for peace, one for wisdom and one for kindness… This string tradition has its roots in the Thai and Sri Lankan Theravada. My wife and I were given 2 different kinds by Bhante Buddharakkhita and Bhante G @ Bhavana Monestary before and after our wedding. One white, and one gold and braided. Also, Lung Ta Chi @ Wat Thai DC gave me one – braided white & orange as a blessing to help me find a job. They are nice Dharma reminders of a theme, a teacher or an event and they are meant to remind you of non-clinging & non attachment when they inevitably fall off. They are called “Mangala Succa” (sp?) or blessing thread (I believe, from what Bhante Rahula told us) in Pali, and “Sai Sin” in Thai. The ones I got for my weeding have since fallen off and the one given by Lung Ta is literally hanging by a thread
Be well all!
