Really, what the hell is going on here?
…From the website JustJaredJR:
“Miley Cyrus sported loveDBM’s cute Buddha bracelet during her recent Wonder World 2009 Tour. JJJ fell in love with the bracelet so much that we’re giving THREE readers a chance to win one!”
If any of this means something to you, fill me in. (Miley can’t be a Buddhist — this is just Buddha-bling — right?) Or click here if you wanna try and win one.
Slight update: The contest is over. But: Good ol’ Konchog Norbu points us to a new quote from Miley, here:
“The one thing Im really strong about regarding my religious beliefs is that you should know a little bit about everything before you define your own beliefs. I think all religions have a good practice in them. Liam and I have been reading about Buddhism lately and it’s all about hope and love. To me, faith is about having a clean slate and a clean start.”

If Miley goes Buddhist it will be the biggest thing in Dharma since the Prajnaparamita!

I don’t know what all of that alphabet soup is about, but I’m not surprised by the “Buddha bracelet” at all. “Budda/Power beads” were big maybe 7-8 years ago, I think. I remember Britney wore a set before trading them in for a Kabbalah bracelet. I think it’s easy to criticize this stuff as icky – really easy, my first reaction was to cringe – but I have no idea what these items mean to any given celebrity wearer. I don’t use a lot of chanting in my own practice, but I regularly wear any of the several malas I’ve collected over the years, and I find they help me feel grounded in my practice as I go through the day. ‘Course, that doesn’t seem to be the point of this contest.

I guess this is no different than seeing an image of a Buddha on t-shirts with sayings such as, “I have the body of a God.” I am just sad that celebrities treat religions as a trend, not so much what a “religion” means to others. Strange observation, the celebrities that are dead set on their religion and very opinionated about them, are the ones that you wonder if they’re crazy or not.

OMG, OMG, OMG! Miley is a Buddhist too? That is SOOOOOO cool! I hope I win a MileyMala!
Seriously, her quote didn’t sound completely devoid of intelligence at the end of the post.
As per any marketing of religious symbols: It is all about intent. I occassionally go around wearing the horrible 2 dollar “born again” Christian tees that they sell at Walmart for the pure pleasure of the conversations I get into with other “born-agains”

Miley Cyrus as the Bodhisattva of Testing Our Patience and Kind Humor. May she bestow her blessings on all beings and may we all know true happiness and kindness.
