Video: Arj Barker’s “The Sickest Buddhist”/ UPDATED

Now back online: comedian Arj Barker’s video’d skewering of spiritual materialist Buddhists. It’s not always spot-on, but still…

Thanks to Jesse from Shambhala Sun for the tip!

Ethan Nichtern also posted his thoughts about “The Sickest Buddhist” over on the One City blog, when the video first debuted. Check that out here.

sorry folks. i had to take it down but it will be coming out with Arj Barker’s DVD in the fall of this year.
im glad it sparked so much conversation about WHAT buddhism is and what it is not.
We are working on a feature film with Arj Barker on the same subject and look forward to hearing back from the world about how it is received.

Heh, can’t believe they made you take it down… would have been the best publicity imaginable for an obscure comedian! Hope someone sees the light in the next day or two and reinstates it, otherwise the “Sickest Buddhist’s” moment will probably have been lost.

    Dear Sir
I am so glad I was able to see it when it was available and look forward to maybe seeing it again. The comments were most interesting as well. While not a religion, Buddhism, like any set of rules _should_ be mocked (though not as much as some others, please) in order for all students to stay alert to creeping hogwash. I look forward to seeing the video discussed in Tricycle. That should be good.

still looking for the explanation about why it was taken down? i thought it was very funny . . . i didn’t find it at all offensive, it was obviously just for the laughs, i thought. and my buddhist friends with a sense of humour are still itching to see it!

Wow, what a dumb idea to take this down. I never knew who Arj was until i saw this on some blogs. How many people will now never know how funny this guy can be. Wait a minute, is this Rupert Murdoch?

I am a practicing Buddhist. I chant and meditate daily… this is not in the least offensive to me. It had me in tears of laughter. I just figured I was the target, a Buddhist. Honestly I came to watch it again a couple days later and its gone.

It is pretty shocking that you guys took it down though. I posted it to several thousands of people and I can only imagine how quickly it went crazy. During the time I saw it it went from 7 views to several hundred… I even posted it on my spiritual blog to help bring laughter to peoples days… cause laughter is one of the best things we can partake in.

Regardless, I better go take it off the blog, had no idea it was gone till now. Sorry to hear about the bad decision.

IF ANYONE FINDS THIS VIDEO AGAIN PLEASE POST WHERE TO FIND IT CAUSE I FOUND IT HILARIOUS AS WELL. THERE WASN’T ANYTHING OFFENSIVE ABOUT THE BUDDHIST RELIGION, IF ANYTHING THEY SHOW HOW PEOPLE EXPLOIT IT BY JUST THINKING IF THEY WHERE THE RIGHT CLOSE AND BURN THE RIGHT INSENT THEN THEY ARE SPIRITUAL. I know we all know people who are like this. WE WANT IT BACK.

Word on the dharma street is that some folk at Spirit Rock didn’t read the use of location agreement fully, and didn’t grasp the concept of the video. When they saw it, they got all uppity and had it removed. You didn’t hear it from me though.

That wasn’t a little funny. It was flippin’ hilarious! Once a week or so I’ve been checking, hoping it’s back online, and today I read that it’s “coming out on DVD.” Bad move, marketing geniuses, whoever you are. I’d never heard of Arj before – may not hear of him again! I’m a practicing Buddhist, by the way, and it didn’t seem anything other than very, very funny to me.
