That is because as a prince, he wore large heavy earrings. Not plugs, though he could have. That would count as a body modification. And if you look at Tibetan and Nepali thanka paintings, as well as others, you will see a number of other deities and historical Buddhas similarly depicted with the earrings actually in- usually symbolic of their "royal" spiritual accomplishments. So all us big eared dhamra punx are impersonating royalty. Chew on that irony for a minute!
