And the surprising new celebrity Buddhist is…

…comedian Rob Schneider.

Seriously!

As this article states:

Schneider discovered Buddhism three years ago and, he says, “it has changed my life”. He is healthier, happier, more reflective and balanced. “It’s given me a peace, it really has,” Schneider enthuses after demonstrating his [meditation] pose on the hotel room carpet. “It’s improved my work. Big Stan works dramatically because I think I’m maturing as a person, I hope.”

So what is Big Stan? Well, it’s Schneider’s new comedy about…um… prison rape. Again: seriously.

…Don’t expect a cavalcade of Right Speech.

Schneider also appeared on The Howard Stern Show last week, and told the following story about Steven Seagal (Schneider just loves to impersonate him):

“He’s doing a movie with Keenan Ivory Wayans…[and] had just met with the Dalai Lama…the Dalai Lama had made him a deity. A god.” Seagal was bragging about the honor, saying, “‘In his wisdom, he decided to make me a deity…I feel a difference, an enlightenment.’”

Then, reported Schneider, a PA interrupted Seagal with a message from the actor’s ex-wife, telling him to pick up their kids from her home, and Seagal responded: “You tell that f’ing c–t to bring those kids over here or I’ll break her f’ing neck!”

Lovely. …And, there was a little more talk of Buddhism on Stern last week. It turns out that Stern himself will be onstage talking about Transcendental Meditation at David Lynch’s big shindig. A caller called in and repeatedly suggested Howard read Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Coming to Our Senses. Hmm! …Not a bad suggestion of course (great book!) but Stern said his speech was going to be short and personal, about the way TM had transformed his life, and that of his mom.

Wow, that Seagal story is really funny but depressing. Still can’t believe they gave him some sort of Tibetan deity title. I’ll never understand that one. :p

But as for Schneider, glad to see he’s enjoying the fruits of Buddhism. :)
