A little slice of Hell, just for you!

Way back, the Horse posted about Buddhist “Hell” theme parks, and also showed you a related sculpture by the artist, Mats!? Well, Mats!? has been going great guns along these lines for a while now with his website and travelog comic, AsiaAdict. To wit, here’s a video he put together, “A little montage consisting of gruesome religious propaganda with a sprinkle of photos of Buddhist Hellparks!”

As one good friend, Joe, says about some Buddhist depictions of Hell and death: “That’s so metal.”

If you want some more, check out Mats!?’s stuff here.

looks like a ton of Thai Theravadin stuff in there…it seems like it fits right in with all the cultural gory ghost stories from Thailand. (o_o)

Several images depict torture at Tuol Sleng prison in Phnom Penh under the Khmer Rouge.

If you want to see the East Asian Mahayana version of Buddhist hells, you can look at Ojoyoshu, which was text written in medieval Japan not unlike Dante’s Inferno, expect the focus was rebirth in the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha, not something Christian.

Buddhajones brings up a good point: as graphic as these images are, reality is much worse, even if less vivid. What happened at Tuol Sleng is a far worse hell than anything minds could conceive of in fiction.
