Frequent and sharp-eyed contributor Jaime McLeod recently wrote with a follow-up on a relative of one of Sam DeWitt’s many Dharma-Burger sightings (originally found here), “Pocket Buddhas.” Writes Jaime:
“Hey Horse, I was browsing the aisles of a local import store that’s having a big ‘going out of business’ sale (too many of those, lately) when I spotted these colorful Buddha banks (photo attached) on a bottom shelf in the children’s department. I usually take this sort of thing in semi-amused stride, but for some reason these kinda creep me out … It’s like what you’d get if you slipped Anne Geddes a tab of LSD during a photo shoot.
… Found the website for them when I got home. Gotta love the fake gong sound effects.”
And reader Beth B. wrote to us about these things literally just moments after Jaime did: “I found these today at my local Borders. They also have lamps and penny banks. I couldn’t believe I was actually seeing it. Each little figure comes with a sticker of each from the collection along with a Buddha quote on the back. They also sell an 8 inch Jesus figure covered in silver glitter along with a Mary figure covered in pink glitter. What a weird trip to the bookstore.”
Thanks for braving the creepiness and weirdness, Beth and Jaime…

I did a scan recently in Amazon.de (german) with “buddh*”. There’s similar stuff coming up like those pocket buddhas. This for example: The Buddha Keyboard.

Freaky. The only one that even looks remotely Buddhist is the Harmony one.
