Okay, Sharon. Come on now. What were you thinking?
As CNN reports, she said made remarks last week at the Cannes Fi
lm Festival, referring to the May 12 earthquake that has killed more than 68,000 people, saying that the quake was an act of “karma.”
“They’re not being nice to the Dalai Lama, who is a friend of mine,” she said. “And then all of this earthquake and all this happened and I thought, is that karma? When you’re not nice, that bad things happen to you?” Stone said on camera.
As a result, Christian Dior very smartly decided to remove her from their Chinese ads.
Here Stone belies not only her tendency to gaffe, but also her slippery grasp on the idea of karma itself.
It’s okay, Sharon.
If you can be forgiven for Basic Instinct 2, you can probably be forgiven for even this.
(Oh, and maybe you wanna stop hawking diamonds, too. Think about the karma there.)

Wow, it’s not often that you get quite that catty, Horse. It’s OK, though. Totally understandable, in this case.

Talk about Instant Karma. Maybe Sharon was being a bodhisattva and illustrating how karma works for all the world to see.

She should have kept mouth shot, legs open

For the record, I was sort of shocked by the appearance of that last comment but decided not to delete it, just because I don’t want to always censor everything. Just because a comment is allowed to stay up doesnt mean its sentiment is endorsed!

It’s just another misguided person using karma as another word for revenge. Not particularly surprising.
It burns me up when someone ask questions to mask saying whatever heartless judgment she is afraid to say directly.

wow… i wonder how she found out every one of those 68000 people were “not nice” to the dalai lama? and who told the tectonic plates!?

[...] And no, Sharon Stone doesn’t have a Facebook page. (Well, there are lots of Sharon Stones, but no legitimate one for the most (in)famous of them.) [...]

wow…let’s go after spontaneously expressive Sharon!
not to mention that diamond ad which is ‘old news’!..and a much younger Sharon, and you knew that going into this!!!.
shame on you..
question…what kind of karma are you trying to reap? ..is it…
i want to attack another person and try and pretend I know the real meaning of karma? You don’t.
Sharon was just spouting off about the earthquake (PELE STYLE) in lieu of all the crappy karma generated by the chinese government and patiots with their recent ‘karma’ of olympic opportunism,..(puck) and concurrent the tibetan raids murders..so I say,..KUDOS SHARONE!
somebody needed to say HEY ..what the F#%&……!
Maybe Mother Earth IS TOTALLY SICK of us all!!!
… so there!….have a nice day.
you are no buddhist.

ah, well thanks, whiteconch, for A) explaining how terrible i am for pointing out Ms Stone’s divisive use of “karma” and then B) attacking me and saying that i’m “no Buddhist,” after a saracastic “have a nice day.”
i needn’t ask “so what does that make you?,” do i?
and, btw, the ad is only illustrative. Stone STILL hawks for Dior to this day.
bye.

oh,.now you want to actually ‘know’ something about me?
no you don’t..
but i’ll answer anyway,..real.
again,….try to have a nice day,..k, now?
ps. get off your high horse, babe.

yikes, whiteconch. sorry. i think you have me wrong, or at least i’d like to think you might.
the point here is not to suggest that Stone is a terrible person. i dont think that at all. (see our Garry Shandling piece for further indication of this). rather, the point is that someone so high-profile should be careful with what she says. Stone both upset a lot of people and furthered a myth about karma (that it can be seen as “punishment”) with her words.
in fact, we should all be careful of with our words. no one is above that. not me, and not you. you’re probably right to take offense at my tone in this case, and i apologize if so. but being a buddhist doesn’t mean being perfect. it means (among other things) watching what you say, being accountable, and so on. Sharon should do that. And so should I. And maybe, by extension, so should you. That’s all.
i actually do want to know something about you. i want to know something about everybody who reads the Horse. this site enjoys a lot of participation from all sorts of very different people. including people is the intention.
when i fail at that, that doesnt make me “no Buddhist.” it makes me human. (as it would with Sharon Stone or anyone else.) that i failed here, at least as far as you’re concerned, doesn’t please me. quite the opposite.
from there, all we can do is recognize that, make our apologies, do our best to make sure we’re not on a high horse, and go on.
