Hell is for Children, but Buddhist Hell is for the whole family!

A while back we posted a link to the lovely mini-sculpture shown here, of a vulture feeding on a poor lost soul in Buddhist Hell. Fun stuff, huh? And dig: it’s actually a reproduction by the artist Mats!?, who based it on a real sculpture. So where can you go to enjoy it in all its life-(and-death-)sized glory?

Your own personal Hellish Holiday in the Sun begins at none other than than Vietnam’s Suoi Tien theme park, which is known by some as the “Buddhist Hell Theme Park.” Sure, there are large meditative Buddha statues and lotus-shaped water fixtures. But there’s so much more to explore. Stroll the park’s lush and colorful grounds with the kids as you contemplate all your unmeritorious actions! Frolic in the giant pool while a fearsome leviathan threatens to swallow you and your loved ones — guts, bones, innertubes, and all!

A little research on this took me to BoingBoing (of course), where a reader had written up some of the park’s details, such as the “animatronic display of the [twelve] torments of hell for people who’d committed particular crimes.” In addition to Suoi Tien, BoingBoing also had some info on similar museums in Japan and Singapore. (This link for the latter is especially good.)

Gee, I hope I get to go to Buddhist Hell someday!
